Twitter Reacts As Hayley Matthews, Nat Sciver-Brunt Steer MI-W To A Dominant Win Over RCB-W In WPL 2023


Match number 4 of the inaugural edition of the Women’s Premier League (WPL 2023) saw the high-profile clash between Harmanpreet Kaur’s Mumbai Indians Women (MI-W) and Smriti Mandhana’s Royal Challengers Bangalore Women (RCB-W). The match between the traditional rivals – Mumbai and Bangalore – was held at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai on Monday, March 6.

MI-W absolutely crushed RCB-W in the match to win by 9 wickets with 34 balls remaining and register consecutive wins while handing the Smriti Mandhana-led side their second defeat.

Earlier, Royal Challengers Bangalore Women won the toss and opted to bat first in the match. They made a lone change to the playing XI as Asha Shobana made way for Shreyanka Patil. Mumbai Indians Women, on the other hand, got what they wanted, which was to bowl first, and they remained unchanged for the WPL match.

Batting first, Royal Challengers Bangalore Women openers Smriti Mandhana and Sophie Devine were off to a good start. However, Saika Ishaque and Hayley Matthews produced double-wicket overs to send RCB-W on the back foot. At the end of the powerplay, RCB-W were at 47/4.

MI-W bowlers kept bowling brilliantly and they managed to bundle out the opposition for 155 in 18.4 overs. Hayley Matthews bagged a three-wicket haul while Amelia Kerr and Saika Ishaque picked up two wickets each. Also, Pooja Vastrakar and Nat Sciver-Brunt chipped in with one wicket each.

Chasing the target, Mumbai Indians Women were off to a brilliant start as openers Hayley Matthews and Yastika Bhatia batted very well. At the end of the powerplay, MI-W were at 54/1, with Yastika Bhatia being cleaned up for 23.

After the dismissal of Yastika Bhatia, Nat Sciver-Brunt joined forces with Hayley Matthews and together they demolished the bowling unit of the Royal Challengers Bangalore Women.

Hayley Matthews smashed exceptional 77 runs off 38 balls, with 13 fours and 1 six, while Sciver-Brunt smashed brilliant 55 runs off 29 balls, with 9 fours and 1 six, to steer Mumbai Indians Women to a dominant victory in 14.2 overs.

Smriti Mandhana & Co. will play their next match on Wednesday, March 8, against the Gujarat Giants Women (GUJ-W) at the Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai. Also, Harmanpreet Kaur-led MI-W will next lock horns with the Delhi Capitals Women (DEL-W) on Thursday, March 9 at the Dr DY Patil Sports Academy in Mumbai.
