IND vs AUS: “Guys With Potential Will Be Given A Longer Run”

Indian skipper Rohit Sharma recently touched down on the poor form of Suryakumar Yadav in ODI cricket and said while the batter has been struggling to find his touch Surya knows the importance of scoring runs and will be given time to settle in.

Unfortunately, Suryakumar has been dismissed in the same way in both of the first two ODIs against Australia, falling leg-before to in-swinging deliveries from Mitchell Starc on the first ball he faced, further extending his poor run in this format.

In fact, Suryakumar has now played in 16 ODIs without scoring a half-century, with his highest score of 34 not out coming against New Zealand. He batted at the No. 4 position in the latest match, which was previously occupied by Shreyas Iyer, who is currently out due to a back injury and has no set timeline for his return.

Rohit Sharma Backs Suryakumar Yadav Despite String Of Poor Performances

According to Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav will be given an uninterrupted chance to play in ODIs, which will help him adapt to the format. He acknowledged that it can take some time to get adjusted to a new format, and since Shreyas Iyer is not available due to injury, the team needs to fill his spot.

“We don’t know about (Shreyas) Iyer’s return. At this time there is a spot available so we have to play him (Suryakumar). He has obviously shown a lot of potential with white ball and I have said it many times before (that) guys with potential will be given some run,”

“Of course, he knows that he needs to do while in a slightly longer format of the game as well. I think things are there in his mind as well. As I said, guys with potential will have enough run where you know they should not feel that ‘Okay, You know I wasn’t given enough chances in that particular slot.”

It is likely that India will continue to field Suryakumar Yadav in the absence of one Shreyas Iyer. While fans have been vocal about the inclusion of Sanju Samson in the squad. Suryakumar Yadav fits the bill and it makes sense to let the player have his time with the position.
